Module Programming in Welland

Module programming without the dealer trip

When a control module is replaced it has to be programmed and coded to your vehicle before it will work. Tony has the programming access and the dealer training to do that here on Colborne St.

Common signs

When to bring it in

  • New module installed but the vehicle will not start
  • Key or fob stopped working, or you need one added
  • Another shop replaced the module but could not program it
  • Warning lights after a module or part swap
  • Transmission shifting wrong after a repair
  • Software update needed to fix a known fault

Scope of work

What it covers

  • Engine control module (ECU / PCM) programming
  • Body control module (BCM) programming
  • Transmission control module (TCM) programming
  • ABS and stability module coding
  • Key and immobilizer programming
  • Replacement module coding and configuration
  • Factory software updates and calibrations
  • Module diagnosis before replacement

Approach

How the job runs

  1. Step 1

Confirm the module is the problem

Modules get blamed for wiring and power-supply faults all the time. Tony tests the power, ground and network connections first so you are not paying to program a module that was never dead.

  2. Step 2

    Install and program

The replacement module is flashed with the correct factory software for your VIN, then coded with your vehicle's options: engine, transmission, trim, keys, and whatever else that module needs to know.

  3. Step 3

Verify it talks to the rest of the car

Every module on the network is re-scanned, adaptations are reset, the immobilizer is checked, and the vehicle is road tested before it goes back to you.

Straight answer

Most shops send this one out

A general shop can fit the module but not code it, so the vehicle goes to the dealer and you pay for the tow, the wait and dealer labour. Tony holds the programming access and does it in the bay at 230 Colborne St, usually without the car leaving.

What you leave with

  • The module flashed with the correct software level for your VIN
  • Options coded to match the vehicle as it was built
  • Confirmation it is talking to the other modules on the bus
  • Fault codes cleared and the system re-scanned before you collect it

Cost

What moves the price

Programming is priced on the work, not the part. Two jobs on the same module can be very different.

  • Whether the module is new, used or the original being reflashed. Used units carry another vehicle's configuration.

  • Whether security or the immobiliser is involved, which adds steps and waiting periods set by the manufacturer.

  • How many modules have to be coded together after a repair.

Questions

Module Programming questions

What is module programming?
Modern vehicles run on dozens of computers: engine, transmission, body, ABS, keys. A replacement module is blank or set up for a different vehicle, so it has to be flashed with the right software and coded to your VIN and options before it will work.
Why do many shops send this to the dealer?
It needs factory-level programming access and the training to use it. Tony has both from his dealer years, so the work stays here in Welland.
Can you program a used module?
Often, yes. It depends on the vehicle and the module. Some can be re-coded to a new VIN, some are locked to the original vehicle. Tony will tell you which before you buy one.
Can you program keys and fobs?
Yes. Bring every key you have when you come in, since some vehicles need all keys present to add a new one. Call ahead with your year, make and model so we can confirm before you drive over.
